PAUL TYSON
Portrait Artist

About
Paul Tyson is a British portrait artist based in Hong Kong. Following an injury in 2013 Paul Tyson was left disabled, unable to use his right arm or work. Moving on from a long-standing career in broadcast journalism, he took up art using his non-dominant left hand. He now draws and paints daily from his studio in Hong Kong. Typically working in charcoal and pencil, Paul's portraits capture his subject's soul, be they human or animal.

Studio by the Bay
Paul Tyson draws and paints daily from his home studio in Clearwater Bay in Hong Kong. He has lived in Hong Kong for the past 13 years, and is married with three sons.

Hidden talent
An injury in Paul's neck caused a stroke in his forties leaving him paralysed down one side and having to relearn to walk. He also suffers from aphasia which makes communication, both verbal and written, difficult. Discovering his talent and love of drawing has been integral to his recovery.

Influences
Paul Tyson grew up in apartheid South Africa near Durban, before moving to the UK. As a TV News Producer he travelled the world covering news stories for the likes of Sky News and Fox News. After marrying he moved to Qatar for the launch of Al Jazeera English before ultimately making the move to Hong Kong. His work in visual news story-telling and cross-cultural experiences are infused into his artwork.
